OPEN WATER DIVER COURSE

This is the course that I teach mostly in Seoul. It is NOT the full PADI Open Water Diver course, since I cannot do the open water dives. Usually, students who contact me already have plans to go somewhere to dive. They want to get the classroom and pool training out of the way before their trip so that it's just straight into the ocean when they arrive at their diving destination. Also, I plan on at least two or three diving trips a year, according to my teaching schedule. I have brought students to Sabang Beach at Puerto Galera in the Philippines to finish off their open water dives. This is a good place to dive, especially for beginners. The atmosphere is relaxed, dive groups are small and all the dive sites are within a 10 minute boat trip!

For the classroom knowledge development and swimming pool training dives, the cost is 350,000 won. I can teach either at the Lotte World Swimming Pool near Chamshil Subway Station, or at Mayfield Hotel Fitness Training center, which is located near Kimpo airport. It depends on where my students live as to which one we train at.

Both pools that I train at are at least 5 meters deep. This gives you a good opportunity to practice controlled descents and ascents, and also to work on bouyancy control!

  • Knowledge Development (5 Modules): Students study with a book and video and answer quizzes at the end of each module. There will be a Final Examination.
For Korean students who want to study English, this training will be done in a classroom, with detailed explanations offered for new vocabulary or grammatical structures. Think of these sessions as a reading course with many chances to converse with a native speaker about the material. Students will also practice listening skills through watching the PADI Open Water Diver video. (For Korean students who are not comfortable with studying in English, Korean language textbooks and videos are available.)
For native speakers who are not interested in classroom study, independent study at your own pace at home or wherever is fine. But you will need to watch the appropriate sections of the PADI video--I recommend these be done in the classroom. Sections are not that long, only about 30 minutes each.

  • Confined Water Training (5 dives done over two days): Each dive will be in a swimming pool at a hotel near Kimpo Airport. Students begin by learning and practicing basic scuba skills, and then progressing to more advanced skills. For a detailed list of skills practiced during these dives, see CONFINED WATER DIVE SKILLS below.

  • Open Water Dives (4 dives): Again, please note that I do not currently offer this training in Korea. Dive trips/rendevous can be arranged however, in the summer and winter months. These four dives are designed to introduce the open water diver trainee to ocean conditions. Students practice the same skills they learned in the swimming pool, plus learn some new skills like compass navigation. These dives are also exploratory dives--There will also be time to explore the underwater world and to have fun!

Doing the fin pivot is your first step in mastering bouyancy control.

CONFINED WATER DIVE SKILLS

Waterskills Assessment

* 200 meter continuous surface swim or 300 meter swim with mask, fin and snorkel.

* 10 minute survival swim or float without swim aids.

Equipment Assembly and Disassembly

1. Before the end of Confined Water Dive 3, the student must:
* Assemble and disassemble a scuba unit at least 3 times.
* Demonstrate proper post-dive care for scuba equipment.

2. Before the end of Confined Water Dive 5, the student must assemble and dissemble a scuba unit at least 5 times, with little or no assistance during the last three assemblies/disassemblies.

3. During all confined water dives, students must have streamlined, secured equipment.

CONFINED WATER DIVE 1

By the end of this confined water dive, the student will be able to:

1. Don and adjust mask, fins, snorkel, BCD, scuba and weights with the assistance of a buddy, instructor or certified assistant.

2. Inflate/deflate a BCD at the surface using the low-pressure inflator.

3. In shallow water, demonstrate proper compressed air breathing habits, remembering to breathe naturally and not hold the breath.

4. Clear a regulator while underwater by exhalation and purge-button methods and resume breathing from it.

5. In shallow water, recover a regulator hose from behind the shoulder while under water.

6. In shallow water, clear a partially flooded mask while under water.

7. Swim underwater with scuba equipment while maintaining control of both direction and depth, properly equalizing the ears and mask to accommodate depth changes.

8. While underwater, locate and read the submersible pressure gauge and signal whether the air supply is adequate or low based on the gauge¡¯s caution zone.

9. In shallow water, breath underwater for at least 30 seconds from an alternate source supplied by another diver.

10. While underwater, recognize and demonstrate standard hand signals.

11. Demonstrate the techniques for a proper ascent.

CONFINED WATER DIVE 2

1. By the end of this confined water dive, the student will be able to:

2. Perform the predive safety check.

3. Demonstrate appropriate deep water entry(s).

4. Clear a snorkel of water by using the blast method and resume breathing though it without lifting the face from the water.

5. Exchange snorkel for regulator and regulator for snorkel repeatedly while at the surface without lifting the face from the water.

6. Swim a distance of at least 50 meters at the surface while wearing scuba and breathing through the snorkel.

7. Demonstrate a descent using the appropriate five step method.

8. Completely remove, replace and clear a mask of water while underwater.

9. Breathe underwater for not less than 1 minute while not wearing a mask.

10. Demonstrate the response to a leaking low pressure inflator by disconnecting the low pressure hose from the inflator mechanism in shallow water (either underwater or at the surface).

11. At the surface in water too deep to stand up in, orally inflate a BCD to at least half full and then fully deflate it.

12. Adjust for proper weighting, which is defined as floating at eye level at the surface with an empty BCD while holding a normal breath.

13. React to air depletion by giving the out-of-air signal in water too deep to stand up in.

14. Demonstrate an ascent using the appropriate five step method.

15. Remove the weights at the surface with minimal assistance using the weight system¡¯s quick release mechanism.

16. In water too deep to stand up in, remove the weights, scuba unit and fins (if necessary), then exit the water using the most appropriate means. (Buddy assistance may be provided.)

CONFINED WATER DIVE 3

By the end of this dive, the student will be able to:

1. Independently establish neutral buoyancy underwater by pivoting on the fin tips, or, when appropriate, another point of contact (both oral and low-pressure inflation).

2. Swim at least 10 meters underwater while maintaining neutral buoyancy.

3. Demonstrate cramp removal technique.

4. At the surface in water too deep to stand up in, perform a tired diver tow for 25 meters.

5. Respond to air depletion by signaling out-of-air, then securing and breathing from an alternate air source supplied by a buddy for at least one minute while swimming underwater.

6. Share air with another diver using an alternate air source, acting as a donor.

7. Breathe effectively from a free-flowing regulator for not less than 30 seconds.

8. Simulate a controlled emergency swimming ascent by swimming horizontally underwater for at least 9 meters while continuously exhaling by emitting a continuous ¡°ahhh¡± sound.

CONFINED WATER DIVE 4

By the end of this dive, students will be able to:

Without Scuba:
1. Demonstrate proper hyperventilation when skin diving.

2. Make a vertical skin dive from the surface in water too deep to stand up in (without excessive splashing or arm movement.)

3. Clear and breathe from a snorkel upon ascent.

With Scuba
1. Swim underwater without a mask for a distance of not less than 15 meters and replace and clear the mask underwater.

2. Using buoyancy control, hover without kicking or sculling for at least 30 seconds.

3. (Optional) Buddy breathe sharing a single air source for a distance of at least 15 meters underwater as both a donor and a receiver.

CONFINED WATER DIVE 5

1. By the end of this dive, students will be able to:

2. Remove, replace, adjust and secure the scuba unit and weights at the surface, with minimal assistance, in water too deep to stand up in.

3. Remove, replace, adjust and secure the weight belt on the bottom in water too deep to stand in.

4. Remove, replace, adjust and secure the scuba unit on the bottom, with minimal assistance, in water too deep to stand up in.
